We are pleased to invite you to an online panel on “Protracted Conflicts, War Economies, and Sustainable Development: Is International Law the Problem or the Solution?”.

The panel seeks to bring together academics and practitioners to explore socio-economic dynamics in war economies of protracted conflicts and what role international law can play in containing but also in exacerbating such dynamics. Questions raised include the following: What role can international law play in containing illicit business activities in such situations? Are general doctrines of international law and classical instruments such as economic sanctions and counter-terrorism frameworks part of the problem? How can international law contribute to overcoming the humanitarian-peace-development divide and how can legal regime interactions promote sustainable solutions rather than exacerbate protracted conflicts? These questions all relate to the central aim of the Endless Conflicts project, namely to examine how an integrated humanitarian and development response to such conflicts can be anchored in and promoted by international law in the pursuit of sustainable peace and development.
